Good Vibrations

GOOD Vibrations was created back in 2017 as a DIY surf competition where in order to score points, you just had to be seen as having fun. The mission behind it was for everyone to leave their problems behind them for one day and to immerse themselves in some 80s filled fun where everyone could enjoy themselves. The organisers were fortunate enough to meet Mind Jersey around that time, and welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with them in helping raising mental health awareness to the island.

Four years on, the event is on a much bigger scale. The event now entails two stages of live bands and DJS, beach football, surfboard art galleries, mental health workshops, 80s haircuts on the day from KSG Barbershop, Mind Jersey Raffle and more.

Cramming in plenty of fun with an eighties-themed vibe while raising awareness for men’s mental health, the organisers are looking for this year to be the best year yet, with the introduction of “Have a Mullet for Mind” – the concept is to enable people to raise money for Mind Jersey by getting a mullet haircut on the day courtesy of KSG Barbershop. You can put yourself forward or nominate a friend (but they must be over 18 and actually consent to wearing such an epic haircut, so keep that in mind) by visiting www.justgiving.com/mindj, clicking ‘fund raise for us’ and following the instructions. Name your entry ‘Mullet for [name of person receiving epic haircut], upload a photograph of the person who needs said epic haircut, then share it with everyone you know on social media to raise a few quid (and by ‘a few’, we mean ‘as much as you can’) for Mind Jersey.

Mind Jersey’s Youthful Minds and Peer Support Service will have sessions throughout the day on mindfulness, selfcare sessions, calm colouring, stress management and lots more in the chill out area. There will also be talks throughout the day about men’s mental health and wellbeing. The Listening Lounge will also be there from 11am to 1pm to talk about their excellent service, as well as Jersey Recovery College between 1pm and 3pm when they’ll be discussing courses and recovery from a positive and empowering standpoint and meet their Peer trainers.

No event of this ilk would be right without a bit of live music, and the Waverider Mainstage sponsored by Liberation Brewery will host 7 of the islands top up-and-coming bands from 12:30 until 20:00. The GV Mind Raffle winners will also be announced on the mainstage where you the top prize is a HERVE SURFBOARDS Twin fin – buy your tickets inside the Mind Jersey store or on the day itself.

The Breda DJ Surf Area will host the hottest local DJs around at the moment while also providing a platform for the KSG mullet for mind competition. The surf contestants will also be congregating in this area – expect a scene from Venice Beach in the 80s!

Remember; ‘it’s okay not to be okay’ – but with Good Vibrations you can leave your troubles behind for the day.
