littlechefrebrandThe Society launched the competition at the end of last year to find Jersey’s most talented young chefs. There were 98 entries including starters, mains and desserts. Individuals were invited to enter as many recipes as they wanted.
The competition aimed to find the best recipes that islanders could cook up, was open to all Jersey residents aged between 11 and 18 years old, and sought recipes for all types of culinary delights, sweet and savoury.
There were two categories, for ages 11-14 years old and 15-18 years old. Calvin de Louche, aged 12, won the 11-14 category with his recipe called ‘Calvin’s Chicken and Creamy Coconut Curry’ and Kieran Sharman, aged 17, who won the 15-18 category his recipe of Brill with Ossobuco Ravioli, Spinach and Wild Mushroom Tarragon Sauce.
Chief Executive of The Channel Islands Co-operative Society, Colin Macleod, said the range, number and quality of entries demonstrated the fantastic variety of fresh produce available in the island and the mouth-watering recipes that can be developed using this produce.
‘Through our support of local suppliers we know what fantastic, seasonal produce is available and our winners have really shown off the best Jersey has to offer. We knew, from the shopping habits of our 100,000 plus members, that there were some great dishes being cooked every day in homes across the island and that many of these were being cooked by talented youngsters,’ he said.
The two winners each received £250 of vouchers for equipment, toys or electronic gadgets of their choice that can be spent at Homemaker. The winning recipes will also be available on the Co-operative website.
The Co-operative’s Junior Recipe Gems competition provided an opportunity for youngsters to share their favourite dishes, copied from the well-worn pages of old family recipe books, national dishes with a local twist or original dishes from innovative home cooks. The Junior Recipe Gems competition ran in both Jersey and Guernsey.
