From custom boards (including some of the world’s best shapers) to shortboards, longboards, stand-up paddleboards and minimals – Madhatter’s have something to suit the most eagle-eyed of ocean-lovers.
Described by owner Steve Wilkinson as ‘the den’ the warehouse is home to a wide range of boards, brands and accessories. “Buying a board is a personal pursuit; one of the reason’s Madhatter’s offer such a bespoke service”. With so much space available, surfers of all shapes and sizes can get a feel for their purchase on tap prior to ordering it online.
Having been in the industry for some 30 years, Steve knows a thing or two about the sport and everything that goes with it, and with the success of the St Helier-based store, the launch of The Madhatter Surfboard Showroom is a wave worth riding. Coinciding with the website WWW.MADHATTER.JE, the new premises allow Steve to showcase even more brands, boards and a wide range of stock, all of which can be found on their online platform. In fact, their online premises are doing so well, they’re distributing goods to surf enthusiasts centred as far as Scandinavia and Italy!
The showroom walls (clad in reclaimed wood and wire brushed for effect) perfectly complement the old scaffolding, which has been welded together to create a series of board stands. Brimming with quirky memorabilia including a vintage combi (complete with flashy interior and flat screen TV), motorbikes, a pool table and soon-to-be coffee bar – ‘original, genuine and weird’ – this office come showroom is anything but your average set-up. The most impressive part? The entire project cost under £2000. There’s even talk of hanging vintage surfboards from the ceiling and installing a drop-down cinema screen – perfect for catching the latest surf-worthy movies and tournaments! Not surprisingly, the warehouse is proving a thriving social area to the budding surf scene!
Conveniently located behind the ‘Horse & Hound’ in St Brelade (directions can be found on the website) – brands stocked include JS, Channel Island, Pukas, Firewire, Pyzel, Ocean Magic and their very own custom ‘Hatter’ surfboards – which Steve oversees the creation of in the UK. Additionally, you’ll find an impressive range of online attire, including wetsuits and Hatter clothing.
With more boards to come, they’re proving to be the largest stockers of surfboards on the island (Steve has contacts everywhere – if he hasn’t heard of a certain brand, it’s unlikely anyone has!). Information on the styles and sizes available can be found online, on Facebook and on Instagram.
Why not pop along and discuss your options for ordering custom boards in a chilled environment – you can even shoot some pool if you’re feeling lucky!
